On the label of BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO is reproduced a rare silver coin called “PARPAGLIOLA” dating back to the year 1556, owned by Roberto Bellini.<\/p>\n
On the obverse, it depicts the Sienese she-wolf suckling twins, with the inscription “R.P.SEN. IN MONTE. ILICINO,” and on the reverse, the fleur-de-lis cross with the inscription “HENRICO II AUSPICE” (King of France, husband of Catherine de’ Medici, and ally of the Sienese).<\/p>\n
The PARPAGLIOLA was minted by the mint master Agnolo Fraschini in 1556 during the period of the Republic of Siena in Montalcino.<\/p>\n
On April 21, 1555, the Sienese, fleeing from Siena conquered by the Spanish and Florentine imperial troops, together with the French troops led by Biagio di Montluc, headed towards Montalcino and retreated to the fortress where they established a new government and proclaimed “LA REPUBBLICA SENENSIS IN MONTE ILCINO” under the protection of the King of France. With the motto “Ubi Cives, ibi Patria,” they were joined by Montalcino nobles and families.<\/p>\n
For several years, the Sienese exiles in Montalcino resisted the sieges of the Spaniards and Florentines until 1559 when the Treaty of Cateau Cambresis, which established peace between the two warring empires, ceded the territory of Montalcino to the Medici Duchy.<\/p>\n
